Sales Tax Calculator

This calculator adds sales tax to a price or works backward to strip tax out of a total, which is handy for budgeting purchases or verifying a receipt.

To add tax, it multiplies the pre-tax price by your rate and adds that to the price. To remove tax, it divides the tax-inclusive total by (1 + rate) to recover the original pre-tax amount.

Example: A $100 item with an 8.875% sales tax rate (typical for New York City) comes to $108.88 total. If you instead have a $108.88 receipt, the pre-tax price works out to $100 with $8.88 in tax.
